Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested two students -- one of a private university and another of a madrasa -- on charge of spreading rumours on social media during the recent student movement for safe roads.
The arrestees were identified as Nazmus Sakib, 24, a student of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), and Ahmed Hossain, 19, a student of Jamiya Nuriya Madrasa, police said.Sharmin Jahan, senior assistant superintendent of police (legal and media cell) of CID, said, “Based on secret information, a special team of CID conducted simultaneous drives at East Rajabazar in Farmgate and Kamrangichar area and arrested Ahmed and Nazmus respectively on Tuesday and early Wednesday.”
“After scrutinising social media from August 4 to August 14, it was seen that some miscreants spread false, fabricated and provocative speeches, pictures and videos, aiming to create anarchy in the country,” she added.
She said, “Many people liked, shared and made comments on those false, fabricated and provocative speeches, pictures and videos without knowing details.”
“The two students were held for spreading rumours on social media and instigating violence and unrest in the country,” she said.
After the arrests, a case was filed with Paltan Police Station against them under Section 57 (2) of the ICT Act on Wednesday, said the police official.
