Verdict on five Patuakhali war criminals today

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is set to deliver its verdict today in a case filed against five men from Patuakhali for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

The accused—Ishaq Sikder, Abdul Gani Hawlader, Abdul Awal alias Moulvi Awal, Abdus Sattar Peyda and Solaiman Mridha— are in jail.

A three-member bench of the ICT led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam came up with verdict pronouncement date on Sunday.

Five accused were tried for their involvement in murder of 17 persons, and 15 incidents of rape, vandalism, arson, abduction and torture in Itabaria village of Patuakhali during the War of Liberation, said prosecution.

Although the accused persons were supporters of Muslim League in 1971, they later joined BNP.

Jeyad-al-Malum and Rezia Sultana Chaman appeared for the state while Abdus Sattar Palwan and Salam Khan for the accused.
