BNP slams government over attack on Mahmudur

Strongly condemning the attack on Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman in Kushtia, BNP on Sunday alleged that all the state machinery and democratic institutions have turned into ‘Awami League puppets’.

“All the state machinery now has completely collapsed, and Bangladesh has turned into a failed state as no institution functions here,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, he also alleged that police are now working at the behest of Awami League. “They (AL) have also established control over the judiciary. All the democratic institutions have become the ruling party’s puppets.”

BNP arranged the press meet protesting the attack on Mahmudur Rahman allegedly by the leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Kushtia the court premises.

Fakhrul said as the BCL activists confined Mahmudur Rahman to a courtroom, he sought protection from the court.

Though the court asked the officer-in-charge to come to spot and ensure the security of Mahmudur, he said the police officer did not comply with the court order. “Police unfortunately didn’t take any steps though the highest authorities were also informed about the matter.”

The BNP leader also alleged that police officer who was present at the court forced Mahmudur out of the court room and handed him over to the ruling party cadres who later attacked him.

After the incident, Fakhrul said the government should have ensured his treatment and sent him to any hospital with police protection. “But, they didn’t do it. We strongly condemn and protest the incident.”

He demanded the government immediately arrest those involved in the attack and take judicial action against them.

The BNP leader said those involved in such unfair acts will not be brought to justice until the fall of the current regime.

BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury were, among others, present at the press meet.
