One person was killed and four women were raped at separate birthday parties at the capital’s Banani in the last one year.
In the latest incident, Mamun Emran Khan, an inspector (special branch) of police, was killed at a birthday bash at Banani.
Quoting the arrested five accused, Abdul Baten, additional commissioner (detective) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said Mamun, with his friend Rahmat Ullah, went to a birthday party at house no 5 on road no 2/3 at Banani Model Town on July 8.
At the birthday party, Swapan, Didar, Atiq and Mizan beat Mamun to death tying him with rope.
Later, his brunt body was found inside a jungle at Ulukhola in Kaliganj of Gazipur on July 10. The accused gave confessional statements before the court.
On February 5, a young girl, 18, was gang-raped at The Star Guest House at Banani after she attended a birthday party of her friend Rajib Ahmed as an invited guest.
After reaching the guest house around 8:30pm, she found there Rajib along with his friend Joy.
Later, they confined and raped her several times, according to the case statement of the young woman.
Afterwards, the accused were arrested.
On July 6, 2017, a woman was raped when she attended a birthday party at Nam village in Banani.
Abdul Matin, inspector (investigation) of Banani police station, said the victim filed a case against Bahauddin Ivan, 28, son of Borhanuddin, a businessman, with the police station.
According to the first information report (FIR), Ivan invited her to his birthday party, promising to introduce her to his mother.
When she reached Ivan’s house, she found neither any birthday party arrangement nor any guest at the house.
At one stage, Ivan violated the girl after confining her to his residence.
Earlier on May 6, 2017, a university student filed a case with Banani police station accusing five people.
Of the accused, Shafat Ahmed, 26, and Nayem Ashraf, 30, were sued for raping the two female students of a private university while Sadman Sakif, 24, Shafat’s driver Billal, 26, and his unnamed bodyguard for abetting the crime.
According to the case statement, the plaintiff along with her friend went to Hotel Raintree at Banani to attend the birthday party of Shafat on March 28.
The two prime accused - Shafat and Nayem- confined them to two separate rooms of the hotel at gunpoint after the rooftop birthday party was over at midnight.
Contacted, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Banani police station, said police could not say how they invitations were given to the victims.
