Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday suggested BNP to test its popularity by joining the next general election.
Speaking at a workshop, he also trashed BNP’s allegation that Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed used to go to Awami League’s office, saying it is a false comment.
“The results of the recent Khulna and Gazipur elections have manifested whether the government is isolated or popular one…join the next polls to assess the popularity. We won’t be able to return to power if people don’t vote for us. So, you (BNP) can take a test by taking part in the national polls,” he said.
Awami League's research cell, Centre for Research and Information (CRI), arranged the workshop on women leadership at a city hotel.
Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said BNP thinks all have got isolated from people like the party as it did not take lesson from Khulna and Gazipur polls.
He said it will be cleared whether BNP goes to the national election without Khaleda Zia in October next after the announcement of the polls schedule as the party’s action has no similarity with its words.
The AL leader said it is the court not the government convicted Khaleda Zia in a corruption case. “BNP has no other alternative to carrying out legal battle to free her from jail.”
He warned that Bangladesh will be affected badly if BNP return to power. “Bangladesh will turn into a breeding ground of terrorists, and old Hawa Bahaban will turn into Khawa Bhaban if BNP comes to power.”
About BNP’s allegation that the EC is now run by its secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed, Quader said, “It’s a politically motivated, false and fabricated comment. BNP must prove it.”
Earlier on Tuesday, secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a programme said the government is now running the Election Commission with its secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed.
“I’ve heard he (Helal), after attending office until 4:pm, used to go to a certain party’s a special office where the party’s all election plans are worked out headed by HT Imam,” Fakhrul added.
Quader strongly detained the allegation that Helal Uddin goes to AL office. “I can challenge that the EC secretary never went to Awami League’s office.”
