Hosts Bangladesh A faced an uphill struggle to save the third unofficial Test after Sri Lanka A’s rampant spinners caused havoc with the ball on opening day at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Lankan’s spin trio Shehan Jayasuriya, Malinda Pushpakumara and Prabath Jayasuriya tore through the Bangladeshi batting order by capturing three wickets each as the visitors bowled out Bangladesh A for a paltry 167 runs in their first innings.

Sri Lanka were 78 for three at the close of their first innings with just 89 runs away from Bangladesh’s first innings total, leaving the home side facing an uphill task to save the match with three days still to go. A limping batting performance by Mohammad Mithun’s men, with only Zakir Hasan (42) and Sanzamul Islam (41) showing some resistance, has left them straggling on a Sylhet pitch that has favoured spinners.

Bangladeshi skipper Mithun’s decision to bat first after winning the toss was backfired as Lankans had their moments of control in the opening session.
