The Dhaka University (DU) Senate, the highest academic body of the university, on Wednesday approved a Tk 7.41 billion (741.13 crore) budget for fiscal year 2018-19 with a deficit of Tk 415.4 million (41.54 crore).
DU Treasurer Prof Dr Kamal Uddin placed the budget at the Senate Session held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium on Wednesday. Vice-chancellor and Chairman of the Senate Prof Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman presided over the session.Of the total budget, Tk 628.31 crore will be available from the University Grants Commission as government grant while the rest Tk 71.28 will be managed from the internal income of the university. Of the amount, Tk 432.95 crore , about 58.42 percent of the total budget, will be spent for salary, pension and other allowances of teachers, officers and employees while only Tk 36.55 crore would be spent for research activities and Tk 68.42 crore for exam-related expenditures.
Meanwhile, in current fiscal year the authorities increased Tk 10.36 crore for research activities and Tk 37.79 crore for exam- related costs as seven city colleges have already been affiliated with DU. The budget was placed in the finance committee on June 4 and was approved by the syndicate on June 7, 2018. Speaking on the session, Prof Kamal Uddin said, "The financial allocation for DU should be considered as a part of government long-term strategy."
