Awami League confident of victory, fair balloting in Gazipur

Awami League is confident that the government’s development and party’s strong organisational strength in the city will determine its victory in the second election to Gazipur City Corporation on Tuesday.

The ruling party senior leaders and its mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam also hoped that the election will be held in a fair and credible manner.

They also said BNP is talking about possible violence, vote rigging and election irregularities just to create a ground to mislead people sensing its defeat in the election.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader at a press conference today said the government will in no way interfere in the Gazipur polls. “The election will be free and fair and the government is extending all necessary cooperation to the Election Commission so that it can work independently.”

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already said she wants to see a credible and free and fair election.

Quader said a peaceful environment has been prevailing in the election area of Gazipur while the voters are very enthusiastic about casting their votes.

He alleged that BNP is bringing various false allegations regarding the polls environment as per its old habit as the party did it earlier before any election.

Talking to UNB, Awami League presidium member Abdul Matin Khasru said they have no confusion about free and fair polls in Gazipur. “The polls will be cent percent fair and peaceful as our leader Sheikh Hasina has given clear instructions that the party doesn’t want to tarnish its image for any irregularities by party men in the polls.”

He said BNP is bringing various allegations and raising doubt about a fair election as the party has understood that it will not be possible for it to win the polls. “It’s also part of their political strategy.”

Khasru said their mayoral candidate is young, competent and popular who has very good image among the voters.

The ruling party leader said the government’s huge development activities and people’s annoyance against BNP’s ‘negative and destructive’ politics and their party’s strong organisational strength will be the instrumental for their party’s win in the election.

Awami joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said their party secretary general Obaidul Quader has already said the government is providing all-out support to the EC to hold a credible election.

“The Election will surely be free and fair and it’ll be held in a congenial atmosphere. “BNP is bringing false allegations so that it can justify its defeat in the polls after the election.”

Meanwhile, a delegation of Awami League, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Political Affairs Advisor HT Imam, met Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda today and voiced satisfaction over the election atmosphere in Gazipur.

Talking to journalists, he said Awami League is there with the EC to ensure a credible election in a peaceful manner.

Imam said BNP always resorts to some evil tactics before any election and brings some false allegations. “They’re doing all those things as part of their efforts to make the election controversial and belittle the Election Commission.”

Talking to UNB, AL mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam said he is confident that the election will be held in a fair and credible manner, and he will come out as the winner.

He said the BNP mayoral runner is bringing false and baseless allegations sensing his defeat.

Jahangir said people will vote him as they believe he will be able to turn the city into a modern one and fulfill their hopes and aspirations. “They also prefer me as a young candidate. They’ll vote me for development of the city and for a positive change.”
