Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation has demanded removal of taxes slapped in the proposed budget on filter bidi before granting it on june 29.
They also demanded to announce cottage industry status for bidi and fixing Tk 100 wage for making per one thousand bidi.
They came up with the demands at a discussion titled “Bidi industry and labourers” held at National Press Club in the capital on Monday jointly organized by Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation and Research Development Collectivity (RDC).
The speakers said in the proposed budget, the price of bidi increased from Tk 12 to Tk 15. But in the meeting with the Bidi Owners Association on May 20, the Finance Minister said that he would not increase the tax on the bidi.
In the fiscal year 2018-2019, the finance minister increased the prices for per one thousand bidi to Tk 420 from Tk 336. Which indicated 25 percent increase of tariffs on bidi, speakers added.
Former Industry Minister Dilip Barua urged the government to withdraw the additional duty on filter bidi before approval of the budget in the national parliament on June 29.
The discussion meeting was presided over by the president of Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation Amin Uddin BSc while Workers Party’s general secretary and parliamentarian Fazle Hossen Badsha adorned the function as the chief guest.
