BNP is likely to nominate two incumbent mayors as its mayor candidates for Rajshahi and Sylhet while a new face in Barishal city polls.
BNP’s nomination board took interviews of 17 party nomination aspirants on Thursday night at party chairperson’s Gulshan office to finalise the party’s three mayoral candidates to contest the elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal city polls.
BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Jamiruddin Sircar, Mahbubur Rahman, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury were there in the party nomination board.
The nomination board, however, did not announce its decision.
BNP insiders said the party is considering Moasaddek Hossain Bulbul for Rajshai, Ariful Haque Chowdhury for Sylhet and party joint secretary general Mujibur Rahman Sarwar for Barishal city polls as mayoral candidates.
They said the party is going to drop Barishal Mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal as local leaders and activists are unhappy with him.
The BNP leaders said Sarwar went to the interview board as per the directions of the party high command though he was not interested in contesting the election.
Talking to reporters, he said local leaders bought a party nomination form for him, and he will contest the polls if the party gives him nomination.
The elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city corporations will be held on July 30.
According to the election schedule announced by the Election Commission, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is June 28, while the dates for scrutinising those are July 1 and 2, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 9.
BNP candidates Bulbul, and Ariful Haque and Kamal were elected mayors in Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city polls respectively in 2013.
