Everything you need to know about World Music Day

It’s Word Music Day on June 21. The day is celebrated every year by music lovers across the globe. The day is also known as Fete de la Musique, a music festival organised in France in 1982.

The history behind this day is interesting.

On World Music Day, people of a city or country are allowed and urged to play music outside in their neighbourhoods or in public spaces and parks. If you are rock and pop fan, even free concerts are also organised where musicians play for free.

In October 1981, Maurice Fleuret, a French composer and music journalist, became the Director of Music and Dance at Minister of Culture and one year later discovered that on the basis of cultural habits of French people, one child out of two played a musical instrument.

Ever since its inception back in 1982, Fête de la Musique has went on to become a global phenomenon and celebrated on the same day in more than 120 countries including China, Italy, Australia, India, Peru, Canada and the United States.

Every festival has a purpose, and there are two main reasons to celebrate World Music Day. In Paris, amateurs and professional musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets, under the slogan “Faites de la musique (Make Music). The other reason is to entertain people without paying any money to listen to some of your favourite musician as concerts are organised for free and performers donate their time and efforts to make this day even more memorable.

Another country that has lived upto the essence of this day created by the French is the United Kingdom. They have their own music day and has been officially celebrating the event since 2012 with the aid of Music Day UK, which is organisation held responsible for coordinating the events.

According to a report in The Indian Express, around 150 artistes from over 16 countries are expected to perform tomorrow at multiple venues across Udiapur. The line up consists of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to a Catalan fusion band performing at the fest.

This festival is one of the most celebrated festival in some countries as millions of people take their favourite music out on the street (literally) without any hassles from anyone and if you do face any kind of hassle from anyone then just let them know it’s the day of the music and ask them to celebrate the day with you.
