The government has appointed Lieutenant General Aziz Ahmed new chief of the army staff for three years with a promotion to the rank of General.
To this effect, the defence ministry issued a circular on Monday.Aziz Ahmed, currently Quarter Master General of Bangladesh Army, will replace Army Chief General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq on June 25.
Abu Belal Mohammad was appointed army chief on June 10, 2015 and took over the charge on June 25.
The circular also says General Abu Belal Mohammad has been sent into retirement with effect from June 25.
The Inter Service Public Relations Directorate conveyed news of the appointment and retirement to the media.
“Aziz Ahmed will take charge as General on June 25,” ISPR Directorate Director Lt Col Alamgir Kabir told the daily sun.
Aziz Ahmed is currently serving as the Quarter Master General of Bangladesh Army. Earlier, he was GOC of Army Training and Doctrine Command of Bangladesh Army.He was also director general of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) during the period between 2014 and 2016. He also served as the GOC of 33 Infantry Division stationed at Comilla cantonment.
Aziz Ahmed had served as the founder chairman of Shimanto Bank, which is a commercial bank and a sister concern of BGB Welfare Trust.
Over the course of his career, he served as Chittagong Hill Tracts GSO-3 (Operations), brigade major for the infantry brigade, a Grade-2 official of the Army Training Directorate and a Grade-1 staff officer of the Army Directorate of Pay and Allowance.
Born in December 1961, Aziz Ahmed was commissioned in Corps of Artillery on June 10, 1983 from the Bangladesh Military Academy.
His father Wadud Ahmed of Chandpur was an Air Force official. Aziz passed his SSC exams from Mohammadpur Govt High School and his HSC exams from Notre Dame College.
Aziz Ahmed is married to Begum Dilshad Nahar Aziz and the couple is blessed with three sons.
