Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has dedicated the honorary Doctor of Literature (DLitt) degree, which was conferred on her at a special convocation of Kazi Nazrul University at Asansol in West Bengal on Saturday, to all Bangladesh people.
The prime minister said though Kazi Nazrul Islam born in Churulia village under Asansol in India's West Bengal, he is Bangladesh's national poet.
The honorary degree was conferred on Sheikh Hasina on the occasion of Nazrul Islam’s 119th birth anniversary.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana and Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor were present on the occasion.
Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla also was present.
“Bangabandhu is the symbol of independence and Nazrul is symbol of literature” the prime minister said.
“Nazrul was born in a poor family so that his name was ‘Dukhu Mia’, but he dedicated himself for the welfare of people. Nazrul served in jail many times for his poem,” she said.
"India was beside us during Liberation War in 1971. They trained our freedom fighters in that period. Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi stood beside us during liberation war" the Prime Minster said.
