Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived Kolkata this morning on a two-day official visit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
During her visit, Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi will inaugurate Bangladesh Bhaban at Visva-Bharati University at Santiniketan in West Bengal today (Friday).
She is visiting India mainly to inaugurate Bangladesh Bhaban and attend the convocation of Kazi Nazrul University at Asansol in West Bengal.
The two prime ministers, however, will also hold a bilateral meeting at the conference room of Bangladesh Bhaban on the first day after the inauguration of the building.
Bangladesh government has built Bangladesh Bhaban at Santiniketan at a cost of Tk 25 crore. Bangladesh Bhaban has a 450-seat theatre, the largest at the university.
A library of books on Bangladesh and its relationship with India is also available at Bangladesh Bhaban besides a collection of the country’s historical and cultural artifacts. Murals of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Rabindranath Tagore have been placed on both sides of the entrance to the building.
During the joint celebrations of Rabindranath’s 150th birth anniversary in 2011, Sheikh Hasina announced that Bangladesh Bhaban will be built at Santiniketan.
After the bilateral meeting, Bangladesh premier will attend an iftar party at Taj Bengal Hotel in Kolkata to be hosted by Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali.
Narendra Modi will return to New Delhi after talks with Sheikh Hasina. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached Shantiniketan on Thursday.
Bilateral meeting between the two leaders is going to take place as the Indian prime minister expressed his eagerness to attend it.
Both the prime ministers will review different bilateral issues and some specific topics during the talks.
Though diplomatic sources could not confirm whether Teesta water sharing deal will come up for discussion, the Bangladesh envoy in New Delhi expects a big announcement after the talks.
Bangladesh High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali, Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Keshav Gokhale and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla will also be present at the meeting
As per schedule, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will arrive at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata on Friday morning.
She will be escorted to Santiniketan by a helicopter of Indian Air Force.
During her visit, Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to visit Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Museum and Tagore memorial Jorashanko Thakur Bari in Kolkata.
She will attend a meeting with the leaders of Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kolkata to discuss the prospect for bilateral trade between the two countries.
The Bangladesh premier will receive DLit degree at the convocation of Kazi Nazrul University on the second day of her visit.
Iconic actress Shormila Tagore will also receive DLit degree at the convocation.
Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to return home on Saturday night, wrapping up her two-day India visit.
