The High Court will hear today (Tuesday) three separate petitions filed by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia seeking bail in three cases which were filed over murder, use of explosive and making defamatory comment on the number of liberation war deaths.
A division bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice JBM Hassan was supposed to hear the petitions on Monday, but deferred the hearing following a time plea by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
Khaleda Zia, who is in jail following conviction in Zia orphanage trust case, filed the petitions with the High Court through her lawyers on Sunday.
She moved the High Court with the petitions seeking her bail in three cases involving arson, killing and defamation in Cumilla and Norail.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court upheld an order of the High Court that granted bail to Khaleda Zia in a graft case in which she is convicted and serving jail term. Despite the SC order, she cannot be released for arrest warrant issued in three other cases.
She is facing two cases filed over arson attack on passenger bus at Chauddagram in Cumilla on February 3, 2015 during anti-government protest by BNP-Jamaat alliance.
Seven people were killed in the arson attack. One case was filed for committing murder while another for use of explosive substance which constitutes a separate offence.
The defamation case was filed against BNP chief of making controversial comment on Liberation War death count. Noragati Awami League leader Raihan Farooki filed the cases against her on December 24, 2015.
