Election officials are preparing to begin counting the votes after a peaceful end to the Khulna City Corporation polls.
Voting took place at 289 polling centres in the city from 8am to 4pm on Tuesday. Five candidates ran for the post of mayor, while 148 vying for general councillor and 38 reserved-seat female councillor.
The results will be released from the Khulna Returning Officer’s Control Room once the results from all polling centres are collected.
The voting began at 8am and continued till 4pm without any break. A total of 493,093 voters -- 248,986 males and 244,107 females -- were expected to exercise their franchise in the election.
Some 4,972 presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers conducted the election.
Sixteen platoons of BGB consisting of 640 members remained deployed in the election area from Sunday afternoon while 31 magistrates stationed in as many wards.
