Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury on Wednesday said the government would take tougher action against the persons who are found involved in the hill cutting illegally.
The authorities concerned have been asked to remain alert to check hill cutting to avoid any disaster, he told a workshop on "Landslide in hilly areas and creating awareness" at the BIAM auditorium in the city, an official release said.
Secretary of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Md Shah Kamal, Director of Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) Ahmedul Haque, Deputy Commissioner Md Kamal Hossain, people representatives of local government bodies, among others, were present at the workshop with Additional Secretary of Disaster Management Ministry Md Mohsin in the chair.
The minister asked local administration and authorities concerned to shift those families living in risky hilly areas to safer places, reports BSS.
He laid emphasis on creating awareness on hill cutting to avert any human- induced disaster including landslide.
While presenting the keynote paper at the workshop, Md Mohsin highlighted adverse consequences of hill cutting. If hill cutting is not stopped, the entire environment will face dire consequence, he added.
