Declared dead, newborn found alive before burial in city

A newborn baby declared dead at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) was found alive hours later when bathing was underway prior to her burial in the city’s Azimpur Graveyard on Monday.

According to DMCH sources, Sharmin Akter, 20, wife of Minhaz Uddin, hailing from Dhamrai, got admitted to the hospital with labour pain early Sunday. Later she gave birth to a baby girl through normal delivery around 7:30 am while the physicians declared her dead.

Sharif, a maternal uncle of the baby brought her to Azimpur Graveyard for burial. When the baby was being given bath for burial, she stirred.

Later, the baby was taken to Azimpur Maternity Hospital where the doctors referred her to Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital.

Now the baby is undergoing treatment at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, said Sharif.

Contacted, DMCH Director Brigadier General AKM Nasir Uddin said the Hospital has formed a four-member probe committee, headed by assistant director Dr Bidyut Kanti Pal, to investigate the incident.
