Students who had been demonstrating for reforms in the country's quota system in civil service, have staged a demonstration on Friday protesting forcing out several DU students of their dormitory early Friday.

Hundreds of students of Dhaka University (DU) brought out a rally carrying banners and festoons at 4pm and marched the campus.

Later, Nurul Haq Nur, the convener of Bangladesh Shadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad demanded resignation of Dhaka University’s Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall Provost Sabita Rezwana Rahman over ‘forcing’ several students out of the dormitory

He also demanded early issuing of the gazette notification over Prime Minister’s directives on quota annulment.

The DU students announced the demonstration programme after the DU authorities allegedly forced out several students of Kabi Sufia Kamal hall of their dormitory early Friday.

The action taken by DU authorities triggered agitation and worrye among the students.

It is not clear yet how many students were forced to leave the dormitory although some students alleged that 20 students were forced out of the hall.

Sabita Rezwana Rahman, provost of the hall, denied the allegation saying, "We called a number of students for investigation and checking their mobile phones They are spreading rumors through fake Facebook accounts. We also called guardians of some students to inform about their daughters’ activities. Three students have been handed over to their local guardians. But we didn’t expel or cancel any student’s seat.”

DU Vice-Chancellor M Akhtaruzzaman said the rumor is false that Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall allegedly ousted at least 50 female students.

The Vice-Chancellor and Proctor Golam Rabbani said the news is unauthentic that hall unit Bangladesh Chhatra League president Iffat Jahan Isha allegedly beat up her party fellow Morsheda Khanom for joining protests for reform of quota system in government jobs on April 10.

The disciplinary board later served a show cause notice on 26 students of the hall for their alleged involvement with the assault of Isha.

On April 10, the DU authorities expelled Isha as some BCL activists led by Isha allegedly swooped on some residents of the hall, leaving Morsheda Akhter, a 4th year student of Botany Department, critically injured.

A probe body was formed soon after the incident.

Besides, the BCL central executive committee expelled Isha on charge of ‘violating organisational discipline’ and later withdrew it as the organisation also found her innocent.

The Dhaka University authorities on Wednesday withdrew its previous order expelling Isha as its probe body found ‘no evidence of torture on a student inside the hall’ by Isha.
