Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested four people, including the alleged mastermind, over the murder of an elderly Garo woman and her daughter in Kalachandpur area of the capital.
Tipped-off, a team of Rab-1 conducted a drive in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur around 6pm on Wednesday and arrested the four suspects, including 'mastermind' Sanjib Chiran, 21.
Three other arrestees are - Raju Sangma alias Rasel, 24, Probin Sangma, 19, and Shovo Chisim alias Shanta, 18.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees disclosed that Sanjib made plan to kill his aunt Sujata Chiran and his grandmother Besat Moni Chiran for money one month back, said Rab Director (Media) Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan while briefing reporters at Rab's Karwan Bazar Media Centre on Thursday.
Mufti Mahmud said Ashish Mankin, the husband of killed Sujata, provided a job of a security guard to Sanjib in Dhaka one year back. But Sanjib quitted the job and returned to his village in Sherpur as he was not satisfied with the job of a security guard due to poor salary.
As per his preplanned, Sanjib along with Shanta and Probin came to Dhaka on March 19 and met Raju, another friend, at a city hotel.
Later, they went to Kalachandpur on Tuesday morning to materialise their plan of killings.
However, they did not enter to the flat of Sujata as a number of family members were staying there, the Rab director (Media) said.
Finally, they moved to the flat at around 3pm.
According to their plan, they, including Sujata, drank locally made wine and at one stage Sujata became unconscious. Then they were trying to steal money from the flat, said Rab official.
At the time, Sujata's mother Besat Moni Chiran returned to the flat from outside. Then they first strangulated Besat Moni Chiran to death and stabbed Sujata to death, he added.
As they did not find any money in the flat, they fled the scene soon confirming the deaths of Besat Moni and her daughter, confessed the arrestees during primary interrogation.
Later, the four arrestees made plan to flee India crossing border but their plan went in vein as the elite force managed to arrest them, said Mufti Mahmud.
On Tuesday night, police recovered the bodies of Besat Moni Chiran, 65, and her daughter Sujata Chiran, 40, from the 4th floor of a multi-storey building in the area.
Of them, Sujata was slaughtered and Besnat Moni was strangled, police said.
On Wednesday, Besat Moni's husband Ashish Mankin filed a case with the Gulshan Police Station over the double murders.
The law enforcers also collected the footage from the CCTV camera of the building where they found four youths, including Sanjib, son of Sujata's sister, entering the flat on Tuesday afternoon.
