Smuggler killed in Benapole ‘gunfight’

An alleged smuggler was killed in a gunfight between members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and smugglers in Daulatpur frontier here on early Tuesday, UNB reports.


The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Hossain, 26, son of Yakub Hossain, a resident of Khoridanga village.


Lt Col Tariqul Hakim, commanding officer of BGB-21 battalion, said being tipped off that a gang of smugglers was entering border area along with smuggling goods, a team of BGB conducted a drive there.


Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the smugglers opened fire on BGB, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight, leaving Ibrahim dead on the spot.


On information, police recovered the body from the spot in the morning and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital, said Firoz Uddin, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Benapole Port Police Station.


A shooter gun and two rounds of bullets were recovered from the spot.
