Pro-AL JU teachers’ faction protests ‘threats’

A faction of Awami League-backed Jahangirnagar University (JU) teachers on Monday laid a siege to the administrative building for two hours protesting threats allegedly issued by university Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam and the teachers loyal to her.

The teachers, led by former JU VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir, under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswasi Progotishil Shikkhak Samaj’ began their siege programme around 11am.

Around 100 teachers from different faculties joined the protest programme.

Acting president of the organisation Prof Lutfor Rahman alleged that some teachers of the organisation were threatened with termination and depriving of promotion by the VC and his followers several times as they demanded a fresh VC panel election.

Earlier on Sunday, Prof Farzana Islam was reappointed for the second time as the Jahangirnagar University VC for four years.

On March 2, 2014, she was made the first female vice-chancellor of the country.
