Ruling Awami League is analysing BNP’s possible action programmes centering the verdict on its chief Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, according to party sources.

Insiders say the AL will not allow BNP men to carry out any subversive acts over the judgment on Khaleda Zia to be delivered on February 8 in the graft case.

“We are analysing overall situation. We won’t allow BNP men to carry out any subversive acts over the verdict,” AL presidium member Abdur Razzque told the daily sun.

“If they (BNP) try to resort to destructive activities in the country, the AL along with the law enforcing agencies will face them with an iron fist,” he said.

A trial court on Thursday fixed February 8 for delivery of the verdict after the completion the arguments in the much-talked-about orphanage graft case.

According to the case, Khaleda and her son Tarique Rahman, also senior vice-chairman of BNP, and four others, embezzled Tk 21 million in foreign donation.

It is learnt from sources that the ruling party will remain on the street on the day of the judgement so that BNP men cannot stage any untoward incidents.

The government has already directed the law enforcing agencies to remain on high alert to avert any untoward incidents, an AL leader said.

The intelligence agencies may also conduct raids on the strongholds of the BNP to foil their ‘evil’ plan, he added.

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Friday warned that stern action will be taken if anybody tries to create mayhem over the verdict in the graft case.

“Stern action will be taken if anybody tries to create anarchy over the verdict,” he said, adding that everyone is equal in the eyes of law.

An AL organizsng secretary says they are now observing the prevailing situation.

“Lives and property of the people will be ensured at any cost. None will be spared if found guilty of carrying out any acts of violence,” the party leader added.

The BNP has been issuing threats to wage tough movement if the court delivers verdict as per the desire of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In a reaction following fixing of the date for the verdict, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the judgment is set to delivered as per the desire of the premier.

“Jatiya Party hairman HM Ershad, also PM’s special envoy, has said Khaleda Zia will have to languish in jail with in a short time. Is the verdict against Khaleda Zia pre-determined?”

Referring to the BNP’s threats, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said  people of the country will resist BNP any attempt to carry out acts of violence.

“If the BNP men try to carry out firebombing in the country once again, people will resist them,” he added.
