The second phase of three-day Bishwa Ijtema has begun today (Friday) on the banks of the Turag at Tongi in Gazipur amid tight security.
Thousands of devotees from home and abroad started thronging the Ijtema ground on the banks of the Turag since Wednesday night to take part in the grand religious event for seeking divine blessings of Almighty Allah.
The 165-acre Ijtema ground on the eastern banks of the Turag is getting filled up with devotees.
The second phase of Bishwa Ijtema has begun with ‘Aam Bayan’ (general sermons) by noted scholars after Fajr prayers which will end with Akheri Munajat (final prayers) on Sunday.
The first phase of Bishwa Ijtema was held at the same venue on January 13-15.
Gazipur district administration and other relevant authorities completed all preparations for holding Ijtema in a peaceful manner.
Security and other facilities have been ensured at the Ijtema venue for devotees coming from home and abroad.
The city corporations, district administration, police, RAB and Ansar and VDP have set up five separate control rooms to monitor overall Ijtema activities.
Bishwa Ijtema is being held in two phases from 2012 to ease the accommodation problem.
The first phase of Ijtema was held at Kakrail Mosque in Dhaka in 1946.
This was followed by a congregation at Chittagong Hajji Camp in 1958, then at Siddhirganj in Narayanganj. Since 1965, Bishwa Ijtema is being held at Tongi regularly.
