Khorshed Alam, President of Comilla North district unit BNP, died at a city hospital on Monday night. He was 66.
Khorshed, who had been admitted to Square Hospital on Sunday with kidney-related problems, breathed his last around 8:30pm, said a BNP press release.
Party sources said the BNP leader had long been suffering from kidney and some other old-age complications.
Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia expressed deep shock at the death of Khorshed.
In a condolence message, she recalled his outstanding role in different democratic movements and strengthening the organisational capacity of Comilla North unit BNP.
The BNP chairperson prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed her profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.
In another message, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also condoled his death.
