Five aspirants have collected BNP nomination papers to contest the upcoming mayoral by-election to Dhaka North City Corporation with the party ticket.

They collected the nomination papers from the party’s central office at  Nayapaltan of the capital at different times on Sunday, BNP assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu told the daily sun.

The nomination aspirants are BNP National Executive Member Tabith Awal, its Assistant Publication Secretary Shakil Wahed, Special Secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon, Dhaka North City Unit President MA Quayum and expelled BNP leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman.

Tabith Awal, also the son of BNP Vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, contested against Awami League supported candidate Annisul Huq for mayoral post in the last DNCC election.

In the last mayoral poll held on April 28, 2015, Tabith boycotted the polls at midday, alleging irregularities and rigging.

After collecting nomination paper from the BNP Nayapaltan central office, Tabith told journalists that he would submit it on Monday.

He expressed the hope that he would get the party nomination again.

Replying to a question, he said if the party gives nomination to other person, he will work for the party-nominated candidate.

During the distribution of nomination forms, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said after scrutinising the party nomination board on Monday will finalise their mayoral candidate.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 last.
