Five aspirants have collected BNP nomination papers to contest the upcoming mayoral by-election to Dhaka North City Corporation with the party ticket.
They collected the nomination papers from the party’s central office at Nayapaltan of the capital at different times on Sunday, BNP assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu told the daily sun.
The nomination aspirants are BNP National Executive Member Tabith Awal, its Assistant Publication Secretary Shakil Wahed, Special Secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon, Dhaka North City Unit President MA Quayum and expelled BNP leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman.
Tabith Awal, also the son of BNP Vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, contested against Awami League supported candidate Annisul Huq for mayoral post in the last DNCC election.
In the last mayoral poll held on April 28, 2015, Tabith boycotted the polls at midday, alleging irregularities and rigging.
After collecting nomination paper from the BNP Nayapaltan central office, Tabith told journalists that he would submit it on Monday.
He expressed the hope that he would get the party nomination again.
Replying to a question, he said if the party gives nomination to other person, he will work for the party-nominated candidate.
During the distribution of nomination forms, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said after scrutinising the party nomination board on Monday will finalise their mayoral candidate.
The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 last.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda recently announced that the DNCC mayoral by-polls will be held on February 26.
The Election Commission has fixed January 18 as the last date for filing nomination papers while scrutiny will be held on January 21 and 22.
The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is January 29.
Meanwhile, BNP Dhaka north city unit on Sunday sold 100 nomination forms while 88 forms were submitted the same day, according to a press release.
The interview of the councillor aspirants will be held at the Dhaka north city BNP office from 9:00am on Monday.
Earlier, on Saturday night the BNP standing committee, in its meeting with the party chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair, decided to sell the nomination papers as they couldn’t finalise their party candidate.
The party asked aspirants to collect nomination forms from the party's central office at Naya Paltan by 4:00pm on Sunday. The fee of the nomination paper was fixed at Tk 10,000.
The nomination papers will be submited to the party's central office by 4:00pm on Monday with dipositing Tk 25,000 as security money.
The aspirants will have to appear before the party's nomination board for interview at the BNP chief's Gulshan office at 8:30pm on Monday.
