Fog disrupts flight operations, ferry services

Dense fog has disrupted flight operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) and ferry services at Paturia-Daulatdia and Shimulia-Kathalbari routes.

Flights at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were suspended for six hours since Sunday due to dense fog, leading to cancellation of all domestic flights and diversion of one international flight.

CAAB official informed that the HSIA was blanketed with thick fog leading to diversion of Kuala Lumpur -Dhaka fight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines to Kolkata.  Besides, all domestic flights were cancelled as the runway visibility dropped since 5.10 am, reports UNB.

Poor runway visibility forced the airport authorities to stop both inbound and outbound flight operations, the officer said adding that a domestic flight left the airport after 11 am as fog disappeared.

Flight operations at the airport have been kept suspended for over three and half hours from 2:10 am to 5:50 am since January 1 due to runway’s renovation work. And it will continue till March 31, said the CAAB official.

All airlines were also informed the matter and they rescheduled their flights, he further said.

Meanwhile, the ferry services were disrupted heavily as after five hours of suspension the Shimulia-Kathalbari ferry services resumed at around 10:00am on Sunday morning.

According to BIWTA sources, three ferries were stranded mid-Padma and at least 300 vehicles were waiting in queue on either side of the terminals in the early hours on Sunday.

Salauddin, an assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha told UNB that ferries on Paturia-Daulatdia were halted for three hours since 6:00am.
