1st phase of Biswa Ijtema ends today

The first phase of Biswa Ijtema will end with Akheri Munajat (final prayers) on the bank of the Turag River in Tongi of Gazipur today.

Hafez Mohammad Zubayer, imam of Kakrail Mosque in Dhaka, will lead the munajat at 11:00am.

Tens of thousands of devotees from home and abroad have attended the Islamic congregation.

Some 4,473 devotees from 88 countries have participated in the annual event.

Ibrahin Refa, an Islamic scholar of Kuwait, conducted aam bayan (general sermon) on Saturday. The sermon was translated into Bengali by Maulana Nurur Rahman.

Four devotees, including a Malaysian citizen, have died of old-age complications and heart attacks at the Ijtema venue within two days.

The first-phase Biswa Ijtema is meant for devotees from 14 districts while the second phase for 13 other districts.

The second phase will begin on January 19.

Besides, people from 37 districts will attend the religious congregation to be held in the third phase locally.

Meanwhile, traffic on Tangail-Mymensingh highway has been suspended following the Akheri munajat.

The traffic restriction imposed from Saturday night to Sunday morning caused public sufferings.

Indian scholar Saad Kandhalvi, who cannot attend the Ijtema due to an internal conflict between two factions of Tabligh Jamaat, returned home on Saturday.

Although he had been leading the sermon for the last few couples of years, two factions reached a consensus to keep him aside.

Sources said he was taken to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport amid tight security and flew by Jet Airways 12:00pm.

Earlier, he held meetings with ameers and others of Tabligh Jamaat from different countries at Kakrail Mosque. They set dates for the next Biswa Ijtema.

A meeting source said Saad may attend the Biswa Ijtema and lead the sermon next year.
