Sale of warm clothes soars

Sales of warm clothes have soared as a cold wave accompanied by dense fog is sweeping across the country, forcing many people to buy winter clothing.

Traders said footpath and high-street shops are witnessing crowds of customers this winter. The fury of the biting cold has boosted sales of warm clothes.

Shoppers are found buying sweaters, jackets, trousers, blazers, scarf, mufflers, blankets, quilts, gloves, caps and shocks.

They are also buying room heaters, water heater, hotpots and other things to protect themselves from the chill.

The record lowest temperature of 2.6 in the country has hit hard people from all walks of life, especially the poor living in slums and open spaces.

People gathered different shopping malls and footpath and high-street shops for buying winter clothes.

Traders are selling warm clothes and blankets, including secondhand ones, at shopping malls and other shops in the capital.

Shops at Baitul Mukarram, New Market, Purana Paltan, GPO, Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Farmgate and Shadarghat areas are witnessing huge rush of customers.

Customers said shopkeepers are busy selling sweaters, jackets, woollen clothes, trousers and blazers. Their demands are growing gradually.

Traders said they are witnessing huge crowds of customers. The stock of warm clothes has finished.

Some buyers alleged that many traders are taking higher prices due to growing demands for warm clothes.

Most of the limited-income people were seen buying warm clothes at cheaper prices from makeshift shops.

Some buyers are searching for second-hand warm clothes at cheap prices.

While visiting New Market, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Farmgate areas on Saturday, this correspondent found warm clothing being sold.

Sharif Ahmed, a jobholder, told the daily sun, “I am shopping for winter clothing in New Market to protect my family from severe cold.”

He bought two jackets, a sweater, three woollen caps and three mufflers.

“The prices of warm clothes have increased due to their increasing demands, he added.
