Poush Mela begins at Bangla Academy

A three-day 19th Poush Mela, a festival of welcoming winter, began on the Bangla Academy premises in the capital on Friday.

Language movement veteran and eminent journalist Kamal Lohani inaugurated the festival by igniting a mud-made lamp as a custom of rural culture.

President of Sammilita Sanskritik Jote Golam Quddus, also president of the 19th Poush-Mela Udjapan Parishad, presided over the festival.

A daylong cultural event, including solo performance, group dance and recitation, was arranged on the opening day of the fair.

Traditional winter foods and cakes, and artifacts of the country's rural cottage industry were displayed in the fair to attract the city dwellers.

Director of the folklore museum and archive of Bangla Academy Shahida Khatun, and Udjapan Parishad general secretary Biswajit Roy Bangla, among others, were present on the occasion.

The Poush-Mela will end on Sunday.
