A Dhaka court has sentenced five people, including two brothers, to life imprisonment in the Mahmudul Hasan murder case.
The lifers are Abdul Munnaf and Abdul Motaleb, sons of Abdul Hakim from Sadar upazila's Char Babna village, Hafizur Rahman, son of Suruzzaman, Syed Zaman, son of late Abdul Jabbar, and Shariful Islam, son of Moksed Ali.
Chandan Kumar Pal, public prosecutor, said the convicts will have to pay Tk 20,000 each in fine or receive an additional six months’ jail.
The verdict was read out by District and Session’s Judge Md Awlad Hossain Bhuiyan on Tuesday.
According to the prosecution, Mahmudul used to run an irrigation pump at Sadar upazila's Namapara village under Char Bhabna union.
On 15 April 2004, he got into a quarrel with Abdul Munnaf over the distribution of water. Later, Munnaf and his associates attacked Mahmudul, leaving him dead on the spot.
Mahmudul's elder brother Arif Rabbani later filed a murder case against Munnaf and six of his accomplices.
After hearing the deliberations of the plaintiff, coroner, the investigating officer and five other witnesses, the court delivered its verdict on Tuesday.
