Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) general secretary Akramul Hasan was arrested on Friday from the National Press Club premises in the capital in connection with two cases.
Police picked up Akramul while he was coming out of the Press Club after joining a programme, marking BNP’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman’s 53rd birthday there.
Confirming about arrest of the JCD leader, Md Mahmudul Haque, officer-in-charge of Paltan police station said the JCD leader was arrested at 12:00 pm following two arrest warrant issued by a Dhaka court against him in two cases filed with Paltan police station.
Meanwhile, hours after the arrest, in a statement, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep concern at the arrest of Akramul Hasan.
Demanding Akram’s immediate release, Fakhrul also said he was detained in continuation of the arrest of BNP leaders and activists across the country.
Meanwhile, JCD announced a two-day countrywide demonstration beginning today to protest the arrest.
JCD president Rajib Ahsan and acting general secretary Asaduzzaman Asad protested the arrest of Akramul and demanded his immediate unconditional release, said a press release.
The JCD, an associate organisation of BNP, will bring out protest procession and hold protest rally in district, city, and university units today and in thana, municipality and college units tomorrow in protest against the arrest of Akram and demanding his release.
