Early variety of potato appears in city markets

Early variety of potato has appeared in the kitchen markets of the capital, but its price is too high following good demand of the tuber crop.

People wait for this variety of potato for the taste when cooked with winter vegetables, fish or meat.

Farmers in Rangpur division are very happy due to its high price in local markets.

This year, a large number of early variety of potato arrived from neighbouring India as most of potato seedbeds in the country got damaged due to excessive rains.

Local farmers cultivate early variety of potato like Kufri Shindhury, Diamond, Lal Pakri and Sheel Bilatee.

Harvesting of potato started in Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Bogra, Pabna, Kushtia and Dhaka regions and the tuber crop started hitting local markets.

Early variety of potato is now being sold at Tk 80-100 per kilogram at different kitchen markets in the capital whereas it is on sale at Tk 50-Tk 60 per kg at farmers’ level in Rangpur.

Riaz Ahmed, a farmer of Nilphamari Sadar upazila said, “I have started harvesting potato in small scale from my five bighas of land since last week.”

This variety of potato was first introduced in Nilphamari by the traders of Bikrampur (Munshiganj). Many traders encouraged local farmers by providing hard cash for cultivating potato to get handsome profits.

Local farmers usually cultivate early variety of potato like Cardinal and Diamond.

“Potato farmers faced great loss in peak harvesting season earlier, but peasantry involved in cultivating early variety of potato got respite from loses,” said farm economist Prof Golam Hafiz Kennedy.

He said that farmers have been doing their basic job by raising production, but they get little return from it.

“Lack of market facility is responsible for farmers’ deprivation,” he said.
