Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said it is apparent that BNP would take part in the next national polls under any circumstances.
"If BNP does not take part in the next elections, their fate will be like that of Muslim League," he said, while addressing a commemorative meeting at Haildhor High School ground in Anwara Upazila of Chittagong on Saturday.
Anwara Upazila and Karnaphuli Upazila units of Awami League organized the meeting marking the 5th death anniversary of AL former presidium member Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu.
Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, termed BNP as a haphazard, undisciplined and weak party. "Every leader of this party (BNP) speaks differently on different occasions," he added.
AL Anwara Upazila unit President Abdul Mannan presided over the meeting, addressed, among others by Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, AL Organising Secretary AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua and Deputy Publicity Secretary Aminul Islam.
Quader stressed on the unity among the AL leaders and activists and said none would be able to defeat a united AL in polls.
He urged the party leaders and activists to remain united and advised them to shun all sorts of differences by January next.
The minister said BNP itself carried out attack on its Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's motorcade to draw the attention of world media.
"They staged the drama by themselves with their activists and now they are putting the blame on Chhatra League and Juba League activists", he said.
Later, Quader joined a rally at Kanchanbad High School playground under Chandanaish upazila in the district.
Addressing on the occasion, he said the BNP's way of going to power through mechanism in 2001 will not be repeated in Bangladesh.
Referring to BNP Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed's remarks, Quader said "He (Moudud) repeatedly changes his face.As BNP men do not believe him (Moudud), he frequently speaks a lot to remain in the good book of BNP leadership."
On Moudud Ahmed's contention that time would come when law enforcers and administration will not stay beside the Awami League government, Quader said: "Caretaker government as like as 2001 will not be formed again in Bangladesh."
The AL general secretary said there is no room for going beyond constitution. "The parliament election will be held under the Election Commission as per the constitution," he added.
Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Organising Secretary Enamul Haque Shamim, Chittagong South unit President Moslem Uddin and local lawmaker Nazrul Islam Chowdhury addressed the function, among others, with Chandaish Upazila Awami League Vice-President Abul Bashar Bhuiyan in the chair.
