The nation on Friday paid glowing tributes to four slain national leaders, who were forerunners of the country's independence, on the occasion of the Jail Killing Day.
On this day in 1975, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Captain M Mamnsur Ali and AHM Quamaruzzaman were killed by some disgruntled army officers inside Dhaka Central Jail following the brutal assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family in a military putsch on August 15 the same year.
The programmes of the day started with lowering of the national and party flags at Bangabandhu Bhaban and Awami League offices across the country at half mast, hoisting of black flags and wearing of black badges as a mark of respect to the martyrs of November 3, 1975.
Awami League (AL) and different social, cultural and political organizations today placed wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the graves of four national leaders marking the Jail Killing Day.
AL placed wreaths at Bangabandhu's portrait at Dhanmondi and the graves of three national leaders at Banani graveyard in the city in the morning. Wreaths were also placed at AHM Kamaruzzaman's grave in Rajshahi.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders, marking the Jail Killing Day.
On behalf of the Prime Minister, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury and Health Minister Mohammed Nasim placed a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road No 32 this morning.
General Secretary of Awami League and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader and senior leaders placed another wreath at the portrait on behalf of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.
Awami League Presidium Members Advocate Sahara Khatun, Dr Md Abdur Razzak and Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan, Joint General Secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Dr Dipu Moni, Publicity and Publications Affairs Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud and Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap were present, among others.
Later, the AL leaders placed wreaths at the graves of August 15 martyrs and the national leaders at Banani graveyard and offered fateha. A milad mahfil and special munajat were also held there.
Besides, Dhaka city AL, Mahila Awami League, Juba League, Sechchhasebak League, Krishak League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Sramik League, Joy Bangla Sangskritik Oikya Jote, Awami Muktijoddha League, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, and other social cultural and political organizations paid homage to the August 15 martyrs and four national leaders.
Awami League leaders also paid homage at the cell inside former Dhaka Central Jail where the four national leaders were assassinated.
Marking the day, a discussion was organized at Krishibid Institution auditorium with AL Advisory Council Member Amir Hossain Amu in the chair.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Presidium Members Begum Matia Chowdhury, Mohammed Nasim, Lt Col (Retd) Muhammad Faruq Khan and Adv. Abdul Matin Khasru, among others, addressed it.
In Rajshahi, City unit of Awami League and its front-organizations observed the day through various programmes paying homage to the martyred.
Scores of wreaths were placed on the grave of Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman, one of the four national leaders, in city's Kadirganj family graveyard.
The programme also included mourning rallies and garlanding of portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four other national leaders at Awami League office.
The Jail Killing Day was also observed in different districts, including Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, Barisal, Mymensingh, Rangpur, Comilla, Jessore, Kurigram, Narail, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Pabna, Bagerhat, Gopalganj, Kushtia, Noakhali and Netrakona paying homage to the four slain national leaders.
