Nasrul for new technologies in power sector

State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid has called for adopting new technologies in the power sector, saying this will save land while setting up power infrastructures.

He made the suggestion while addressing a contract signing ceremony at the Biduyt Bhaban on Wednesday where Power Division signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka and Swedish technology company ABB.

Under the MoU, the Swedish Embassy and ABB will initiate several pilot projects in power transmission and distribution sectors to improve the efficiency. Digitisations of grid and destruction system were included in the projects.

Swedish export credit agency EKN will finance the projects.

Different utilities in power transmission and distribution like PGCB, Desco, DPDC, REB and WZPDCL will be supported under the deal for the improvement of their systems.

Nasrul Hamid said the utilities should move for new technologies as part of the preparations to upgrade their systems as the government has announced a vision to become a developed nation by 2041.

He noted that many of the officials in the power sector do not want to take the risk for new technologies.

The function was also addressed by Swedish Ambassador Charlotta Schlyter, Power Division Additional Secretary Mahbub Alam, PDB Chairman Khaled Mahmood and ABB’s Singapore and South East Asia Managing Director Jahan de Villiers.

The Swedish ambassador said her country will continue its support for Bangladesh’s power sector development.

ABB South East Asia chief said his company has been proud to work in Bangladesh for decades and wants to continue its business here.
