BCL infighting, police action leave five injured in Ctg

CHITTAGONG: At least five leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were injured in factional clash and police action on Chittagong Government College campus on Monday.

The injured were identified as Gias Uddin, 26, Rahul Shil, 24, Anwar Polash, 25, Hanif Sumon, 20, and Al Riad, 18.  

Of them, Gias and Rahul are students of Chittagong College while rest three of nearby Government Hajji Muhammad Mohsin College.   

Sources said two feuding groups led by BCL leaders Mahmudul Karim and Subhas Mollick Sabuj loyal to Chittagong city Chhatra League General Secretary Nurul Azim Rony and Chawk Bazar-based Juba League leader Nur Mostafa Tinu locked in clash over establishing supremacy on the campus on Sunday.

Following the clash, a fellow of Sabuj was beaten up by supporters of Mahmudul while he went to a bank near the college at around 10:00am on the day. On information, Sabuj group gathered on the college campus while their rivals near the area creating a tense situation.

Police dispersed both the groups for several times as they tried to attack each others, said the sources.

At one stage, police charged batons to bring the situation under control at around 12:15pm. The police action left at least four BCL leaders and activists injured.
