CHITTAGONG: An alleged drug peddler was killed in a ‘shoot-out’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Mirsarai Upazila in the district early on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Didarul Alam Chowdhury, 33, son of Mahbub Alam Chowdhury of Jorarganj area under the upazila.

Senior Assistant Director (media) Mimtanur Rahman of the RAB-7 said on receiving information, a team of elite force set up a checkpoint and signaled two Chittagong-bound microbuses on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Durgapur area to stop at around 3:00am.

Sensing danger, drug pushers opened fire from the microbus, prompting the RAB men to retaliate, leaving Didarul badly injured, said Mimtanur.

At one stage of the gunfight, the drug peddlers fled in one of the microbuses, he said.

Didarul was rushed to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared him dead, said the RAB officer.

RAB men recovered a foreign pistol, four rounds of ammunition, a magazine and 600 bottles of phensidyl from the microbus, he said.
