Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon has vowed to eradicate mosquito-borne disease chikungunya from the areas under his jurisdiction within the near future.
“The Dhaka South City Corporation will have chikungunya under control within four to six weeks,” the mayor said at a chikungunya awareness-raising programme on Saturday.
Mayor Khokon said the disease can be eradicated in rapid pace through the united efforts of the city corporation workers to raise awareness.
Previously on July 14, he said it could take three to four weeks to control the disease. He added, “Eight days later I tell you that Dhaka South City corporation area will be free of chikungunya within the next 10 days.”
The mayor also warned Dhaka dwellers not to let their guard down, stressing on vigilance to control the disease.
The mayor said he understood the pain of those affected by chikungunya because his own mother was suffering from it and he would use his understanding to fight it.
