Ex-health secretary Syed Monjurul Islam made icddr,b’s chief operating officer

Syed Monjurul Islam, former Secretary of Health and Family Welfare ministry has been appointed as the Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of icddr,b.

 

icddr,b’s board of trustees has announced his appointment on Thursday saying he has accepted the appointment which will be effective from Sunday, February 19, 2017, said a press release.

 

Monjurul Islam retired from his role as Secretary in October 2016, after a successful career as a senior member of the Bangladesh Civil Service.

 

He has previously represented the government on a wide range of committees, which include The Global Fund, GAVI and the icddr,b Board of Trustees. Monjurul Islam was responsible for overseeing the Ministry of Health’s annual budget of approximately US$2 billion and 200,000 staff across seven executing agencies.

 

icddr,b’s board of trustees optimistic that Monjurul Islam will bring knowledge in health, finance, project/programme management, governance, bilateral funding and working with donors, as well as team building.

 

Dr Richard Smith, Chair of the Board, icddr,b said, "The competition for this post was intense, and Monjurul Islam has emerged at the head of an impressive field.

His intimate knowledge of health, Bangladesh, and international organisations will strengthen icddr,b's work in conducting research to improve the health of the people of Bangladesh and other low and middle income countries. In particular, he will help ensure that icddr,b's discoveries are widely implemented."

 

Monjurul Islam has a post Graduate Diploma in ‘Development Planning Techniques’ from the Graduate School of Development Studies, Institute of Social Studies (ISS), The Hague Netherlands (1997), and an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka (1983) and a Bachelor of Commerce, from the University of Dhaka (1979).
