Two more defamation cases were filed Daily Observer editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury with Dhaka courts on Tuesday on charges of publishing a “false and fabricated” report in his newspaper.
Awami league lawmaker Enamul Haque filed the cases against Iqbal Sobhan, also the prime minister’s media adviser, and reporter Mamunur Rashid.
One of the cases was filed with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarafuzzaman Ansari on a charge of damaging his image.
The court recorded the statement of the plaintiff and fixed February 2 for passing order in the case.
Another case was filed with the court of the fifth joint-district judge Monwara Begum, demanding Tk 100 crore as compensation.
The court fixed February 7 for a hearing on cognizance of the case, court sources said.
According to the case statements, the Daily Observer on January 23 published a report headlined ‘Police await PM’s order to launch crackdown on drug lords’.
The daily falsely implicated the name of Enamul Haque, an MP from Rajshahi-4 constituency, in the report. The lawmaker claimed that the report is false and fabricated and has tarnished his image.
On Monday, Awami League lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari filed a Tk 10-crore defamation case against Iqbal Sobhan with a Feni court.
