A transport worker was crushed under a bus as its driver turned reckless when a group of workers tried to stop the vehicle on Dhaka-Rangpur highway in Komorpur area of Gobindabanj upazila in Gaibandha district on Monday morning.
The deceased was identified as Raihan Ali, a member of Gobindoganj Motor Workers’ Union.
Quoting officer-in-charge Abul Bashar of Gobindoganj Highway Police UNB said there had been a dispute between Gaibandha Motor Owners’ Association and Gobindoganj Motor Owners’ Association over the plying of the latter’s vehicles on all the routes across the district without the former’s approval.
As the motor owners of Gobindabanj continued to run their vehicles in district routes, the district-level motor owners’ union on Sunday last announced an indefinite transport strike from Tuesday.
In reaction, the workers of Gobindoganj Motor Worker’s Union tried to obstruct a Dhaka-bound bus Bhai-Bandhu paribahan, coming from Gaibandha Sadar, in Chowmatha area but it ran away.
Later the workers again tried to obstruct the bus in Komorpur area.
The bus hit Raihan while it broke free and headed towards Bogra, leaving him dead on the spot.
Following the accident, the workers of the union blocked Dhaka-Rangpur highway at Choumatha intersection in Gobindabanj around 9am, halting the movement of vehicles that came from eight northern districts.
