5 jailed for arranging child marriage in Thakurgaon

A mobile court in Thakurgaon on Thursday night sentenced five people, including a marriage registrar, to different jail terms for arranging a child marriage at Sindulla village in Pirganj Upazila, UNB reports.

 

 

The convicts were identified as marriage registrar Hafez Abdul Jalil, his assistant Ajgar Ali, bridegroom Sohel Rana, his brother-in-law Shariful Islam and bride’s maternal uncle Mainul Islam.

 

On information that Khushi Akter, a Class-V student, and daughter of Abdul Razzak of Sindulla village, was being married off to Sohel Rana, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Pirganj ABM Iftekharul Islam along with Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sarwar Morshed conducted a drive there.

 

Later, the mobile court, led by the UNO, sentenced Ajgar Ali, Sohel, Shariful Islam and Mainul to one month’s jail while registrar Razzak to 10-day jail under section 5 of the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929.
