CHITTAGONG: A human-chain was formed in the city on Monday demanding implementation of coal-based power plant by S Alam Group at coastal Banshkhali upazila in the district.
Political, social and professional organisations from different upazilas including Patiya, Anwara and Banshkhali participated in the human-chain formed under the banner of ‘People from all walks of life in Chittagong’ in front of Chittagong Press Club in the afternoon.
Leaders of these organisations addressed the human-chain extending solidarity to the demand for implementing the power plant.
ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, president of ruling Awami League Chittagong city unit and former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation, also joined and addressed the human chain.
Addressing the human-chain, Mohiuddin Chowdhury said the government is taking different steps to increase generation and solve crisis of power. Setting up of the power plant at Banshkhali also aims at solving power crisis. But, some people were made to stand against the project through spreading confusion.
None should oppose any development project without hearing or knowing about it. S Alam Group took the initiative for setting up the power plant to help ease power crisis in the country, he said.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury said tragic death of four persons in clash over setting up of the power plant created strong resentment among many. He called for making people living around the project site understand and settling the matter through compensating the losses caused in the clash.
Addressing the human chain, many of the speakers said that they have come to the city from remote areas only to join the human-chain as they want the power plant.
They thanked S Alam Group for taking up the power plant project and said the plant would benefit people of Banshkhali.
