Lifter Mabia Akhter Simanta bagged the first gold medal for Bangladesh in the 12th South Asian Games in the women’s 63-kg weight category of weightlifting at the Bhogeshwari Phukanani Indoor Stadium in Dispur, Guwahati on Sunday.
The champion weightlifter from Bangladesh lifted 67kg during snatch and 82kg during clean and jerk.
Earlier, lifter Fullapati Chakma clinched a silver medal for Bangladesh in women’s 58-kg weight category weightlifting at the same venue on Sunday.
With Mabiya’s success, Bangladesh now has 11 medals in the bag. Eight bronze, two silver and a gold so far.
The South Asian Games 2016 is a major multi-sport event taking place from February 5 to February 16.
A total of 2,672 athletes are scheduled to compete in 228 events over 23 sports.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the tournament in Guwahati on February 5.
