Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer and Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Rezaul Karim has accused Jamaat-e-Islami of taking contradictory positions over its demands during a recent long march and statements made by its ameer in Parliament.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a workers’ rally at Fazlul Ulum Madrasa in Kushtia town on Tuesday afternoon.

Rezaul Karim said the words “Aqimuddin” had been removed from Jamaat-e-Islami’s logo, leaving no reference to the word “Islam” either. He questioned whether the party could still be described as an Islamic political party.

He also claimed that Jamaat had not mentioned in its election manifesto that the country would be governed according to Islamic principles.

Rather, he said, the Jamaat ameer had stated at the time that the party would not run the country according to Sharia and that the existing laws would remain in force.

Questions Jamaat’s long march

Referring to Jamaat’s long march over various demands, Rezaul Karim questioned the rationale behind the programme in light of subsequent remarks by the party’s ameer in Parliament.

“Jamaat held a long march over various demands. But after returning from the long march, its ameer told Parliament that the electricity crisis was not created by the present government,” he said.

“Then the question remains: why was it necessary to burn so much oil and gas to hold the long march?”

“This is a kind of contradictory behaviour,” Rezaul Karim said.
