Dhaka University (DU) has ranked 16th in South Asia and 136th in Asia in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027, retaining its position as Bangladesh's top university for the second consecutive year.
The rankings, published on 3 November 2026 by UK-based higher education and research organisation Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), included 1,722 universities from 26 Asian countries. The University of Hong Kong topped the list, followed by China's Peking University.
Expressing satisfaction, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam said the university's international ranking was a matter of joy and pride. "Consistently maintaining the top position among Bangladeshi universities is recognition of the collective efforts of our teachers, students, researchers and all concerned," he said.
He said the university aimed to maintain its international ranking and strengthen its global standing by improving education and research quality.
"Enriching the university's academic and research environment, expanding research facilities, strengthening international collaboration and creating opportunities for students to develop skills that meet global standards are among the priorities of the university administration," he added.
The vice-chancellor stressed that cooperation from teachers, students, alumni and other stakeholders was essential to improving academic and research standards and enhancing international competitiveness.
The QS Asia rankings assess universities on academic reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, research quality and impact, the proportion of PhD-qualified academic staff, international research collaboration, and the proportions of international faculty and students. Overall rankings are determined by performance across these indicators.
