Bashundhara Shuvosangho on Thursday held an awareness meeting at Wagoi Para in Rowangchhari upazila of Bandarban to raise social awareness against child marriage.
During the meeting, speakers called on families and communities to work together to ensure children’s rights to education and a safe childhood.
They said child marriage forces many adolescent girls to drop out of education at an early age and hampers their physical and mental development, adding that addressing the problem requires not only enforcement of the law but also greater social awareness and collective efforts.
Upazila unit President Shimol Tanchangya chaired the meeting, while its Organising Secretary Monilal Tanchangya moderated it.
Chittagong Hill Tracts Coordinator and Bandarban district unit President Uy Sing Marma stressed the need to expand educational opportunities for children in remote hill areas, raise awareness among parents and inform adolescents about their rights.
Organisation Adviser Apon Tanchangya said poverty, lack of awareness and social superstitions often drive families towards child marriage. Expanding education and holding regular discussions with parents were essential to changing the situation, he added.
