The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecution is set to file formal charges this week against seven former ministers and Awami League (AL) leaders over crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 mass uprising.
ICT Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said the charges would be submitted against former ministers Amir Hossain Amu, Abdur Razzaque, Dr Dipu Moni, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Faruk Khan and Mirza Azam, and former prime minister’s adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury.
Meanwhile, two pro-AL Supreme Court lawyers, M Hasanuzzaman Tushar and Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury, appeared before ICT-2 on Monday and sought an unconditional apology over derogatory social media remarks about the death sentences handed to seven people, including AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, in a crimes against humanity case linked to the uprising.
The tribunal fixed 25 January for a hearing on the matter.
On 16 September this year, following a hearing on contempt allegations brought by the prosecution, the tribunal directed the two lawyers to appear on 23 September and explain their conduct. After they did so, it fixed 26 October for the next hearing.
In a separate case, the prosecution is preparing formal charges against former state minister Kamal Ahmed Majumder, former Dhaka-16 MP Elias Uddin Mollah and others over crimes against humanity during the uprising.
The chief prosecutor said investigators have submitted their report and the charges are being prepared. He expressed confidence that they would be filed within the week.
