Police detained four people, including ANM Ayash, member secretary of the Rashtra Sanglap Forum, on Saturday afternoon after they attempted to erase a graffiti portrait of Rabindranath Tagore on a wall outside Shilpakala Academy in the capital’s Segunbagicha area.
Sheikh Zahidul Islam, deputy commissioner of police (DC) of the Ramna Division, said that the group was stopped by police when they tried to remove the artwork.
“They came to erase the graffiti, and police stopped them,” he said.
At the scene, a young woman was seen applying black ink to the Tagore portrait before a police officer intervened and stopped her.
She said that the group had come to protest “Indian aggression.” Describing Tagore as an Indian, she said that they wanted to erase his image and that she herself had applied the ink.
Led by Ayash, the group was seen chanting slogans after police stepped in. Law enforcers then detained the four and took them to Shahbagh Police Station.
Sub-Inspector Abdul Khaleque, duty officer of the police station, said that three men and a woman had been brought in and were being held in custody. He added that senior officials would decide on further action.
